Welcome to the Spinzone! This site exists for one reason. To help people discover the wealth of real "alternative" and "indie" bands that ARE out there. Alternative came about with the likes of the Sex Pistols and the rest of the 70's punk generation, which turned itself into bands like the Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Jam, Joy Division etc.. which by the 80's would become New Order, the Smiths or the Jesus and Mary Chain. They all were, (and still are) alternative, and it was almost exclusively an English thing. With the death of almost all of those independent English labels and the "poisoning" of the well that was the great English music press it has become much harder to find out about good bands now, who they are, what they sound like and more importantly, where to get the music. That is especially true in the face of the fact that the indie community is not centered around the UK as it once was. These bands come from everywhere now, including the US, Spain, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, the Philippines and especially Sweden. Of course the UK still makes it's contribution too. |

It is hard to believe I have been doing this for 7 years now. Over that time the site has changed it's looks many times, most recently again in april of 07. I doubt this incarnation will be any more permanent, but I am hoping it's nature of allowing me to go back to a more care free, non expectant style may actually result in more stuff getting reviewed. I have been asked by some people in recent years why I never seem to "not" like anything. All one has to do is go thru the archives to see this isn't true, however as my free time decreased over the years I was forced to be more choosy as to what I reviewed. So if I only had time to review 5 albums, I picked the 5 best not the 5 worst figuring at least that way you have something worth buying. Perhaps this new layout will allow me to get back to some well deserved bashing. As I also said before, I feel it needs mentioning that there are two kinds of "indie" artists you will run across in the world. There are no end of records made by people who "have a band" (and really shouldn't) and there are those who really are quite talented and were the world not run by the major record labels, their records would be charting. So we can consider these the haves and have nots. The haves are the same ones who in the 80's were bands like OMD, New Order, House of Love etc... with the have nots being basically musical amateurs. They existed in the 80's but they were obvious. There are also more of the bad ones now as it has never been easier because of technology to make a record at home. Since indie went deep underground most people have a harder time seperating this chaff from the wheat. I do not. It's 100% whole wheat here folks. But that's not to say many a great album was not made in someones basement, but I think you get what I'm driving at. For true fans of the site, click here to view a page featuring a download and info on this sites "favicon" for your browser if you really want to be cool. I tried to set it in code when you bookmark but it hasn't been working but will if you set it yourself. Finally, if you need to know more about me click here. I appreciate your getting this far, and hope you find this site of use, and if you have a comment or question feel free to email me. |
